In this example, manager does not recommend any type of thinking.
The manager only wants the result (or 3 sequential results).

It is very difficult to discuss something with you. You do not read books and are not trained to think by yourself. (People who at least try to think ask other questions.)

The thing the managers wants are not the "3 sequential results". It is too boring to add missing logical steps in your misunderstandings.

So the discussion forces you to reevaluate your mental model, which is hard.

Sad to say, but manager had a point. An ugly and stinky but still a point.

And if someone aims to eat your brains — earlier you find that is better.

Man, I experienced it at tango.me - they wanted call logs in a database, as soon as possible, but could not figure out what kind of database. So I provided three implementations: mysql, mongo, and in memory. They had kicked me out soon, but half a year later I learned that they still can't decide which db to use for call logs.

You must not make fun of managers. If you offer 3 solutions, 2 of them must be unusable. And not simply unusable, but unusable in the way even the managers understand this.

In this case all three were pretty usable; they were changing their mind every day. Not that it bothered me; I enjoyed producing a flexible product. Too flexible maybe.
