Right. What they actually do, they sell words on an auction. For instance, Victoria Secret is paying $1 every time a sponsored link from Google refers to Victoria Secret site.
(The verb "refers" means the following: a link leads to Victoria Secret site, and the link is followed, and a header processed on Victoria Secret contains "referer" from Google.)
I actually love it. Stupid people pay, and greedy people pay, and the rest of the world enjoys.
