in the future
Jun. 2nd, 2006 03:35 pmIn the future people will be known by their ids. Not digital, as some totalitaritopian scaremongers predicted, but alphanumeric. Some will be known as jane666, but most will have nice and convenient names as vpatryshev, pdoyle, aivanov, hrenatson, ivan_ghandhi (split personality), jles, dolboeb, jjb, avva, vital_sol (split personality), etc. What's interesting, while your "maiden name", like "Vladimir", "John", "Hongjun", "Yaron" have a rather totemic meaning ("all Andrews are Jews"), your id is absolutely unique within a huge namespace containing hundreds of millions of names. More, even if (or when) you die, it would be hard for the next generations to grab your name - because your blogs, your mails, all your accounts, all your base still belong to you. Imagine if someone comes up and says, okay, Homer has been dead for Jesus (dead too, but) knows how long, and so I'll be your Homer, this is my first name, and I also have a last name, which is Simpson, but I did not kill my wife. Stupid, no? How many Lawrences Oliviers are there around the world? How many Wills Smiths?
What I suggest. Grab a good name, even if it does not come from your "First", "Middle", "Father's", "Mother's", "Maiden", "Last" (how do you know it is last?) name. Invent something. Make it yours, stick it everywhere, in each blog site, with each email provider. Avoid underscores, it makes you a split personality. Or... how about a perfeclty legal name like this: i_am_the_unique_owner_of_this_unique_id - does it identify anybody?
You can of course take a long name, a part of which could be usedagainst you as a nickname - say, call yourself rameshandranandrapanchatantrasexysadicintheskywithdiamonds, and people will call you ram anyway. Avoid words that contain spam words: e.g. specialist is a bad word, it contains 'cialis'; your mails will be ignored by females.
