Как дизайнить сайты, чтобы не то чтобы все были честными, но чтобы показать, что мы можем тратить только так - take you to a fancy restaurant, и т.п.

Мы получаем от людей signals (intentional), and evidence (unintentional). Девушка в меховой шубе показывает, какая она модная и богатая - но мы при этом читаем, что это существо жестоко к животным.

Вот лось с рогами. Лось хочет сказать - вот у меня какие рога, на фиг мне не нужны, но я могу себе позволить.

Your leisure is the sign of your status. Signals of wasting time. Luxury cars are the same kind of signals.

Conventional signals: I AM GREAT

Another signal of greatness - автомобиль с мигалкой. Но общество за такие штуки наказывает (не всякое).

We always find some ways of faking such signals.

DECEPTION occurs if
- beneficial to signaler
- is costly to receiver

You spend a lot of time teaching your kids to lie. /Извините. Не все; я своих детей не учил врать/

Fashion is a kind of such deceptive signal.Cues of age are now turned into signals; technology, plastic surgery, is used to deceive.

Explaining seemingly irrational behavior.
Suntanning. Extremely common behavior. Historically, it had a different meaning. Tanning is a signal of social position related to leisure. People in the field had no opportunity to stay under the sun. I start thinking she's an idiot

Coco Chanel in 40's discovered tanning is a high status signal.

People spend a lot of time lying on the sand.

Then came tanning booths. It makes you look healthy. Medical reports say it may kill you.

But even if it is unhealthy, it is beneficial for the signal. Meaning, I don't give a fuck about cancer.

Teenagers like to take risk.

FASHION

Blogs themselves function as fashion. FOr my blog to contain the right thing, I have to go out and look through a lot of information. "My blog is the display of my being". In terms of risk - it is much higher. The people who are anxious to be on the forefront have to pick up on stories that makes them popular.
