the real end of paper books
Nov. 4th, 2009 05:02 pmSo, I went to the gorgeous Borders in Palo Alto; spent 10 minutes there trying to find "computer books" department. It was on the second floor. I was looking for Real World Haskell. Lots of books - Zen of CSS, EJB patterns, Java for beginners, JavaScript for beginners, PHP for beginners, Visual .NET++ for the Indians, Manipulating Bits in C++ (for the Chinese), How To Become A Manager and Fuck Those Idiots Programmers... okay, and a couple of books on Scala. No Haskell (for the Russians). No Scheme. No Smalltalk. No ML. No OCaml. No CLU. Order online.
Sure I can order online. Why the fuck then I need Borders? I'll order it on Amazon, single-click, you know. Amazon knows my id, no need to enter your address and phone number after the beep.
But wait. Look at the books's website: http://book.realworldhaskell.org/read/why-functional-programming-why-haskell.html. There are comments! So that if I do not get something, I just ask, and someone answers.
So why would I need a paper copy? Probably the only reason would be tocut on carbs to decrease the CO2 concentration: every tree cut gives way to new growth that takes CO2 out of the atmosphere. So there.
Except that I like it when it's warm. Both from CO2 and from my computer on my lap.
P.S. If you consider this post racist, I just want to remind that I actually recognize only one race. Guess which one? Human race.
