I'm totally stuck with kpsea*** being unable to find texmf.cnf. I have it somewhere in my home dir, I set all kinds of env variables, run it - does not help, all I get is:
warning: kpathsea: configuration file texmf.cnf not found in these directories: /usr/share/texmf/web2c:/usr/share/texmf-texlive/web2c:/usr/local/share/texmf/web2c.

Setting environment won't help. These paths are hardcoded in the executable (or rather libkpathsea.so). You need to recompile it.

This always freaked me out. Why doesn't it look in someplace like ~/.texmf? A mystery.

Omg. That traditional trick, .configure etc... or just fixing the .h file... whatever; will have to.

ln -sf $HOME/texmf.cnf /usr/share/texmf/web2c/

Учитвая, что переменные могут быть почти неограниченной длины -- мне стращно представить сколько вселенных Вам на это потребовалось...

В texlive от debian/lenny работает export TEXMFCNF=/dir/where/texmfcnf/placed

Впрочем, по-моему, этой возможности более 10 лет, так что то, что это texlive и Debian/lenny -- это не суть важно.
