"

 Well, I've probably arrived.

Reading John de Goes' "Tagless Horror", I decided to share his wisdoms with the colleagues, posting a link to #sig-scala Slack channel. Yes, I know, Miles works here.

My new manager, Mike Intravaia, turned out to be a tough guy... or, probably, some ZIO-haters already complained to him.

What Mike wrote:
Hey Vlad. For "reasons", our company is pretty hostile to John DeGoes. Even if that article is a good read, I'd delete that message for now. It's not worth the blowback. I wouldn't say all of (company), taht's a big of an exaggeration. But there are a lot of engineers that are, and they are very influential engineers.

What I wrote:

How interesting. I really did not want to read that article when it was written. But now I'm reading it slowly, and it's an eye-opener for me. ZIO has pretty similar problems as well as Cats. The understanding that slapping together everything from monads and Kleisly, while and update of HTTO4S leads to big refactorings in business logic (had that problem in the previous company) illustrates that it makes sense to learn from our errors, and not repeat them.

Several years have passed since John was blamed of rcism etc. We probably should move on, should not we?

OTOH, I can just sign off from that channel, and let people enjoy each other's society without an alien coming up with something new.
Even if I'm a pretty much influential member of Scala community, I guess, opinions have the right to vary.

And Mike wrote:

I wouldn't sign off from the channel, you do have a lot of great info. Plus, the other Scala engineers use that channel to discuss thing that we all may need to work on.

As for whether or not we should move on, that's harder to talk about. Moving on is definitely a personal and emotional decision. A leader may be able to push it, but I can honestly say that the leaders, in this circumstance, are wholly in the "won't move on" mindset.

Their gieneral thought is that HJohn wasn't blamed, but is _actually_ a bunch of not-so-nice things (or, at a minimum, enables a bunch of not-so-nice things). From what I've gleaned, they feel like this is the type of behavior that defines his personality. In other words, he won't change b/c it's who he is. So time won't heal these things.

Siorry for being long-winded. I've never dealt with John DeGoes or the others around him personally, so I only know of other people's opinions. I do know people who have had first-hand dealings with some people who are in his orbit, and those dealins were not good at all. Some of them are even public. So I have a hard time blaming them for having strong opinions.

Etc, etc.

So, I guess I have maybe several weeks left here. Does it bother me? Not a bit. They want politics, let them have politics, why would I care? Would I shut up? I see no reason for that. No, I did not remove my post, I just unsigned from their #sig-scala. It's been a while that Scala has been taken over by assholes and their friends.

Oh, and what did I do today? Almost nothing. I was on a pager duty; no pager alerts, so... so I did nothing today.

Fucking influentials!

Mike is a professional manager from New York. His only objection was mentioning John de Goes.

How can I not hate cancel culture? How can you? I had spent 40 years in the USSR. And even this is not exactly the fact, I believe I live in a free country. And if Miles complains to Mike about me daring to mention John, then fuck Miles, fuck Mike. I'm not connected with Miles on LinkedIn: I had disconnected from all the idiots who had signed that slanderous anti-Jon letter.

Oh, and I have also written a private message to Miles.

We will see. I don't think Miles is an asshole, I believe (for now) that he's just too naive and socialist.
