Date: 2018-03-03 07:28 am (UTC)I've met a number of people in North Dakota. Spent a couple weeks in a couple of different towns. Kicked around ranch land with some paleontologists from out-of-state looking for fossils. In the summer you get a dry heat well above a hundred degrees regularly, with sudden shocking intrusions of severe weather like massive hailstorms and flash floods. The terrain is vast and almost entirely empty of humans, and to get anywhere you have to drive like hell, sometimes on gravel roads that kick up massive clouds of dust and chew your tires to pieces. You get a rifle to shoot foxes and spend a lot of your time inspecting fence lines and arguing about the cost of meat and feed, in a good-natured "well if we end up eating beans for a season it's okay" sort of way.
North Dakota is very socially supportive as long as you're not a Faggot, a God Damned Athiest, a Negro, an Islamic Arab Terrorist Son Of A Bitch, or a Fucking Liberal Hippie. Thankfully for North Dakotans those people have left the state, and any new ones that pop up quickly leave the state as well, maintaining the peace.
I'm sure a good number of those castaways end up in San Fransisco, enjoying an absurdly comfortable life and, if they're in the tech or financial sector, an absurdly wealthy one as well. By the way, San Fransisco has a hundred thousand more people living within its 46 square miles of city limits than the entire state of North Dakota's 71,000 square miles.
It's true: North Dakotans get approximately 100 square miles per person. In terms of sheer body mass, they are significantly outnumbered by all the cattle wandering around the state, and outnumbered yet again by the sheer body mass of all the ants living in the ground. Plenty of room to roam and animal (and insect) companionship, ostensibly free of pollution, since even the feed lots where the cattle get fattened up are in other states. But would you - could you - choose to live out your life there, after growing up somewhere else? Or is the tunnel-vision its residents experience an essential part of their sense of happiness?
You can't buy that. But you probably wouldn't want to anyway.
